STEM Education

Two Bridges Neighborhood Council provides supplemental STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education as an extension of traditional job training programs for youth. To prepare youth for STEM careers, TBNC offers after-school and summer camp STEM programming with an emphasis on local issues of sustainability and design.

For students to become productive members of 21st century society, they need to be able to quickly learn the core concepts relevant to a specific field of knowledge, while mastering the essentials of learning, innovation, technology, and career skills. These so-called “21st century skills” are most effectively learned by:

  • Authentic Learning= learning from real-world problems & experiences
  • Mental Model Building= using physical and mental models to refine understanding
  • Internal Motivation= employing emotional connections in learning
  • Multi-modal Learning= applying multiple learning methods for diverse styles of learners
  • Social Learning= harnessing the power of social interaction to increase learning impact
  • International Learning= using cultural diversity and global examples to increase teaching & learning skills

In accordance with the recommendations set forth by the National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks of Science Literacy: Project 2061, we focus on conceptual understanding of important relationships, processes, mechanisms, and applications of concepts. Additionally, this curriculum is aligned with New York State and National Science Education Standards.
